History of Liverpool vs Chelsea

The rivalry between Liverpool and Chelsea has grown significantly over the years, especially during the Premier League era. While it lacks the geographical or historical roots of some older rivalries, it has developed into one of the most intense and high-profile matchups in English football, regularly featuring pivotal moments in the race for domestic and European honours.

First Meeting: Early 20th Century

  • First Official Match: Liverpool and Chelsea first faced each other on December 25, 1907, in a First Division match at Stamford Bridge. Liverpool won 4-1.
  • Formation of the Clubs: Liverpool was founded in 1892 following a split from Everton and quickly became a significant force in English football. Chelsea, formed in 1905, also established itself as a prominent club, particularly in the post-war period.

Pivotal Moments in Both Clubs' Histories

  • Liverpool’s Dominance (1960s-1980s): Liverpool established themselves as the dominant force in English football from the 1960s through the 1980s, winning numerous league titles, FA Cups, and European trophies. Under managers like Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley, Liverpool became one of the most successful clubs in Europe, with four European Cups between 1977 and 1984.
  • Chelsea’s Resurgence and Abramovich Era (2000s-Present): Chelsea’s modern era was transformed by the arrival of Roman Abramovich in 2003. The Russian billionaire invested heavily in the club, leading to a period of unprecedented success. Under managers like José Mourinho, Chelsea won multiple Premier League titles, FA Cups, and their first UEFA Champions League in 2012.
  • Rafa Benítez vs. José Mourinho Rivalry: The mid-2000s saw a fierce rivalry develop between Liverpool’s Rafa Benítez and Chelsea’s José Mourinho. Their tactical battles in the Premier League and Champions League added a new intensity to the Liverpool-Chelsea rivalry, with numerous high-stakes matches.
  • Liverpool’s Resurgence Under Jürgen Klopp: Liverpool experienced a resurgence under Jürgen Klopp, culminating in winning the 2019 UEFA Champions League and the 2020 Premier League, their first league title in 30 years. During this period, matches against Chelsea were often crucial in the title race or securing European qualification.
  • Chelsea’s Continued Success: Chelsea continued to build on their success in the 2010s and 2020s, winning the Champions League again in 2021 under Thomas Tuchel. The victory sent Liverpool to the final, where they famously won their fifth European Cup against AC Milan.
  • Chelsea 4-4 Liverpool (2009 Champions League Quarter-Final): In one of the most dramatic matches in Champions League history, Chelsea and Liverpool played out a 4-4 draw at Stamford Bridge in the second leg of their 2009 quarter-final. • Liverpool 5-3 Chelsea (2020 Premier League): This high-scoring encounter at Anfield in July 2020 was part of the celebrations as Liverpool lifted their first Premier League title. The match itself was a thrilling affair, with Liverpool eventually winning 5-3 in what was one of the most entertaining games of the season.
  • Chelsea 2-0 Liverpool (2020 FA Cup): In March 2020, Chelsea knocked Liverpool out of the FA Cup with a 2-0 victory at Stamford Bridge.
