Tough tie ahead for Alexis after Copa America defeat

Alexis Sanchez and Chile will have to do it the hard way if they are to win a third successive Copa America, after losing their final group game to Uruguay on Monday night.

For 82 minutes, the Manchester United striker's national side were on course for a quarter-final meeting with Peru - one of the qualifying third-placed teams - but when Edison Cavani brilliantly headed home from substitute Jonathan Rodriguez's cross, it gave the Uruguayans top spot in Group C and the supposedly easier last-eight tie.

Meanwhile, Chile must face Group B winners Colombia, who finished five points clear of Argentina after winning their first three games.

Alexis overcame the ankle sprain he sustained before grabbing the winner against Ecuador and he played another full 90 at the Maracanda Stadium in Rio de Janiero; the only minutes he has missed so far were the final few against Japan, when he was rested after notching one goal and assisting another in the 4-0 victory.

United's no.7 is the only Chilean player to have scored in four separate Copa America tournaments but he was unable to continue his hot streak in the 2019 edition, despite facing his favourite international opponents Uruguay - he has netted a personal-best five goals against them in the past.

Nevertheless, Alexis is still enjoying an excellent competition in Brazil, with one of his country's legends, Ivan Zamorano, saying this week: "I'm very happy to see him regaining his level and being a vital player for Chile.

"We hope that at the moment you put on the Chilean shirt, you give your best, and that's what Alexis is doing."

Chile will play Colombia in the Copa America quarter-finals on Friday night (00:00 BST Saturday) at Corinthians Arena in Sao Paulo.
