Messi's targets for the rest of the season

Lionel Messi has equalled or beaten some great records in 2019. In the month of March the captain of FC Barcelona equalled Iniesta for the most official matches played for the Club (674), and also surpassed him in terms of League appearances. Subsequently, he passed Xavi Hernández as the Blaugrana with most Club wins in history (477).

In addition, the No.10 also broke through the 400 goal barrier in La Liga in 2019 (currently at 412), he's about to equal and then overtake Iker Casillas as the most successful player in domestic competition (334 wins to date), and, as the Argentine's voracity has no limits, let's look at some of the next records he could aim for in the 2018/19 season:

Fifth Champions League
  • Messi has made it more than clear that the one thing he wants more than any other this year is the Champions League trophy.
  • He’s won it four times already, but at the Wanda Metropolitano in May he’ll be hoping to collect his first as captain.
  • For now, though, he’ll have to get past Manchester United in the quarter-finals.

Lead the Champions League in scoring
  • Messi already did so in 2008/09, 2009/10, 2010/11, 2011/12 and 2014/15.
  • Currently, he has eight in six games, including a hat trick and two braces.

Match the Copa del Rey record
If FC Barcelona beat Valencia in the final on May 25 at the Benito Villamarín, Messi, Sergio Busquets and Gerard Piqué will have all equalled the record of seven victories still held by Piru Gaínza of Athletic Club.
Equal Ryan Giggs and Vitor Baía
If Barcelona win the treble, Messi would pass the former Barça keeper and equal the Man. United legend in 3rd. in all time ranking for senior trophies won.
Third Straight Golden Shoe, Sixth Overall
The Argentinian was Spain and Europe’s top goalscorer last season, and he’s well on course for repeating those successes after a thunderous start to the 2018/19 campaign. He currently has 29 goals, tops in La Liga.
Break the record for hat-tricks
He currently has 51, is one hat-trick away from equalling Cristiano Ronaldo's 34 trebles in the Spanish League and also matching the 52 scored in total by the Portuguese throughout his career.
Hat trick of free kicks
His free kick taking just seems to get more and more perfect … and if he can score two against Espanyol, could he go on to score an unprecedented hat trick?
Copa América
Messi is back with the Argentina national team this spring, and this summer he’ll compete in the Copa América, which he would love to finally win.
Chasing Pelé
  • Pelé scored 643 goals in competitive matches for Santos, and Lionel Messi can already boast 591 for FC Barcelona.
  • It would take a very special kind of Messi magic to catch the Brazilian this year, but if his current form continues, he’s going to get mightily close.
