Whether team or individual, Leo Messi just never stops winning trophies! And now he has another two for his enormous collection.
On Monday, the Barça striker was the star attraction at the Marca 2017/18 Football Awards, held at the Convent dels Àngels in Barcelona.
Top scorer
First, there was the award for finishing, yet again, as the leading goalscorer in the Spanish first division.
With 34 goals in 36 games, which also won him the Golden Shoe as Europe’s top marksman, Messi adds this to his four previous conquests of the Pichichi in 2009/10, 2011/12, 2012/13 and 2016/17.
It puts him up there with Alfredo Di Stefano, Hugo Sánchez and Quini, the only other men to have topped the scoring charts in La Liga five times, and just one short of Telmo Zarra, who won a record six with Athletic Bilbao in the 50s and 60s.
Player of the season
The Argentinian was also honoured with the Trofeo Alfredo Di Stefano as player of the season, an award that he has won more than any other player.
The way the award was presented was simply awesome!
“A competitive Liga”
After being presented with trophies, the Argentinian shared some words with the audience:
“La Liga is more competitive than ever this season” he said. “Anyone can beat anyone. No games are easy but that’s what so good about this competition and for the fans. Let hope it can stay this way.”
“My favourite goal? I’d just say the ones that are more important, rather than the prettiest ones.”
“Physically I’m a lot better. I was looking forward to getting back on the pitch. At first I was scared of taking knocks and getting hit by the ball. But the more I got into the game against Betis, the more confortable I started to feel.”
Like father like son
“While I was out injured, it was great to be able to watch games with my son. I love watching games with him. I was surprised because he understands so many facets of the game and it's the first time I've been able to share something like that with him"
“The day the we laid the first stone of the SJD Pedriatic Cancer Center Barcelona was an extraordinary moment for me. I was delighted to help with the project, and it has quickly been made possible thanks to so many different people. It's a dream come true for so many children.”
