Jose Mourinho sacked by Manchester United with club 19 points off top spot

Manchester United have sacked Jose Mourinho with the side sixth in the Premier League and 19 points behind leaders Liverpool.

The last straw was Sunday's 3-1 loss at Anfield against Liverpool, a game which saw the home side have over 30 shots on the United goal.

Mourinho leaves the club after two-and-a-half years in charge. He will be replaced in the short-term by Michael Carrick as the club look for a caretaker until the end of the season.

They then plan to appoint a new permanent manager in the summer.

Mourinho is due a pay off of around 30 million euros, which is reported to have been the reason why United held off so long before deciding to part ways with the Portuguese coach.

A statement from the club read: "Manchester United has announced that Jose Mourinho has left the club.

"We would like to thank him for his work during his time at Manchester United and wish him success in the future."

"A new caretaker manager will be appointed until the end of the current season, while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager."
