Winter Market: AC Milan announce signing of Mario Mandzukic as Özil causes Fenrbahçe's frenzy

It's rare that a football club aiming to reposition themselves at the forefront of the European stage will seek to bring in two veteran forwards over the age of 34, yet AC Milan have done exactly that by announcing the signing of Mario Mandzukic to partner Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Ibrahimovic's arrival has catapulted Milan back into the Scudetto picture with the team currently sitting top of the Serie A table, and they are in such a strong position that they chosen to add the Croatian forward for depth.

The 34-year-old Mandzukic has been without a club since he left Al-Duhail of Qatar in July, and he has now penned a contract in Milan that is due to run until the end of the 2020/21 season, with the option for an additional year if Stefano Pioli's charges qualify for the Champions League.

Mandzukic will wear the No.9 shirt with Milan, a number that has been considered cursed since the departure of Filippo Inzaghi.

Mesut Ozil has already landed in Istanbul and he will complete his transfer to Fenerbahce, which the player himself has described as a dream come true.

After bringing to an end his relationship with Arsenal, the former Real Madrid playmaker was met at Ataturk airport on Sunday night by Emre Belozoglu, the club's sporting director, with an impromptu interview organised with the club's official media channel.

"I am very excited because I was always a fan of Fenerbahce. My has dream come true for me," Ozil told Fenerbahce's club TV channel.

"That's why I'm very excited to wear the jersey. I hope I will be successful with my teammates. I hope everything will be fine. I wish the best.

"God bless them [the fans]. They always support it. We already know how big we are as a Fenerbahce community.

"They showed it again. I am so happy. I hope I can thank them on the pitch. I wish the best."

According to various reports in the Turkish media, Ozil will sign a three-and-a-half-year contract with the Istanbul club, but no details about his salary have been given.

Mesut Ozil's move to Fenerbahce has seen crazy scenes in Istanbul, that typical Turkish passion that Ozil already knows too well.

The COVID-19 pandemic has prevented the huge welcomes that the citizens of Istanbul and fans of Fenerbahce are used to when a new player arrives at the club.

Despite this, a number of journalists and fans who evaded the quarantine measures got together to give the former Real Madrid and Arsenal star a warm welcome.

The COVID-19 pandemic may have prevented a much greater number of people from visiting the airport to greet Fenerbahce's new signing, but a new craze may have started: one of following flights. Ozil's London to Istanbul flight was the most followed flight of all time.

According to Flightradar, up to 312,676 people viewed the flight's status at some point during its 2,501-kilometre journey from London to Istanbul.

"I am very excited because I was always a fan of Fenerbahce. My has dream come true for me," Ozil told Fenerbahce's club TV channel.

"That's why I'm very excited to wear the jersey. I hope I will be successful with my teammates."
