Seven of the best Spain - England games

Spain and England, two of the world's biggest football cultures, clash one more time again for UEFA Nations League Round 4. After a prestigious opening victory at Wembley Luis Enrique's side will seek another victory over a Gareth Southgate squad which will try to get revenge from Sevilla's Benito Villamarín on October 15th. (20:45h. CEST). These are seven of the most remarkable precedents between both powerhouses.

Spain 0-0 England: 1982
With a place in the last four at stake, this second group stage World Cup clash was a tense encounter. England needed to beat the host nation by two goals to progress to the semi final, but with talisman Kevin Keegan's game time limited throughout the tournament due to injury, it was always going to be one of those 'big asks' we hear so much about in football. Keegan had missed the 1974 and 1978 World Cups because England failed to qualify and the striker, who managed just 26 minutes, was not able to show his class on the biggest stage once again as Ron Greenwood's side were eliminated, despite not losing a game in the tournament. To make matters worse, the former Liverpool and Hamburg ace missed a sitter during his brief cameo, too…

Spain 2-4 England: 1987
Four goals from Gary Lineker, who was playing for Barcelona, gave Bobby Robson's side a morale-boosting win in Madrid. However, the thrilling victory had little effect as they crashed out of the European Championships the following year at the group stage having played three and lost three to Ireland, the Netherlands and the Soviet Union.

England 0-0 Spain (England win 4-2 on penalties): 1996
Terry Venables' England team marched all the way to the semi finals of Euro '96 with notable wins over Scotland and the Netherlands, then a nail-biting win on penalties – yes, win on penalties – against Spain. Unusually for the Three Lions, they emerged victorious via the shoot-out after Alan Shearer, David Platt, Paul Gascoigne and memorably Stuart Pearce, whose delight in scoring was there for all to see, neatly tucked their efforts away. Against Germany in the next round, though, normal service was resumed and their old enemy sent them crashing out on spot kicks.

Spain 4-3 England: 1929
Hungary may have been the first foreign opposition to win at Wembley, but 24 years earlier, Spain became the first continental side to beat England in a match played in sweltering midday heat. Joe Carter, an FA Cup winner with West Brom when they beat Birmingham in 1931, put Walter Winterbottom's side 2-0 up, but by the end of the first 45 minutes the hosts were level. Joe Bradford, who was on the losing FA Cup side when Carter's Baggies claimed the prize, put England in front once more. Two more goals from Spain, though, humbled England, who would exact revenge two years later at Highbury.

England 7-1 Spain: 1931
Portsmouth's Jack Smith scored a brace, as did Man City's Tommy Johnson and Derby's Sammy Crooks, with Everton's legendary striker Dixie Dean grabbing the other. The win, however, was not an indication of things to come for England as mixed results followed including losses to Scotland and Wales, though there were good wins over Germany and Austria over the next few years.

Spain 2-0 England: 2009
The most recent meeting saw England totally outclassed by the European champions, despite their confidence boosted under Fabio Capello with a notable win over Germany in Berlin and a hammering of Croatia away. England were given a reality check as first David Villa easily weaved through the English defence and then Fernando Llorente made sure of victory with eight minutes remaining.

Spain 2-1 England: 2018

After reaching the World Cup 2018 Semifinals England took on 2010 world champions at Wembley in their UEFA Nations League debut. An early Marcus Rashford opener gave the Three Lions the supremacy on the scoresheet but it didn't last for much time as La Roja furious reaction brought Saúl Ñíguez's equalizer two minutes later. Rodrigo Moreno would eventually find the net before the half time to give Spain a brilliant start in the new born UEFA competition at world's football cathedral.
