Saul and Koke stun Real Madrid to seal Super Cup win for Atletico

Two extra time goals from Saul then Koke gave Atletico Madrid a hard-fought 4-2 win over Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup.

Tallinn's Lillekula Stadium played host to European football's pre-season showpiece, and it took no time at all before Diego Costa opened the scoring - just one minute - but goals from Karim Benzema and then a Sergio Ramos penalty gave Real the lead, before Costa levelled late on to send the tie to extra time.

Having lost both the 2014 and 2016 Champions League finals to their bitter rivals, Atletico were buoyed by that late equaliser and first Saul bagged an impressive volley to put the Colchoneros back into the lead, then Koke made sure his side began the season by lifting some silverware.

Julen Lopetegui opted to leave Luka Modric on the bench and had Isco alongside Toni Kross and Casemiro, with Marco Asensio and Gareth Bale flanking Karim Benzema up top. On the other bench, Diego Simeone gave Thomas Lemar and Rodri their full debuts for Atletico.

Atletico made a rip roaring start to the game as Diego Costa headed a Diego Godin long ball over Sergio Ramos, before surging past the covering Raphael Varane and smashing into the far top corner.

A stunned Real Madrid struggled to make it out of their own half as Atleti's high pressing and constant possession put Los Blancos under real pressure, though they were unable to get back in on goal.

As time wore on Lopetegui's men crept into the match, and had more time on the ball which almost resulted in a goal 17 minutes in as Marcelo marauded down the left and his low cross was flicked towards goal by Marco Asensio, but Jan Oblak reacted brilliantly to push the ball wide.

The momentum was with the Champions League holders, though the struggled to break down a resolute Atleti backline, with Marcelo going close with a long range effort.

It wasn't long until Real were level as Gareth Bale went on a surging run down the left and swung in a deep ball to Benzema, who had pulled back from Stefan Savic, and headed past Oblak at the back post.

Another chance came the way of Real, this time it was Asensio who cut inside on the edge of the penalty area and curled a low shot in the direction of the far corner, but it was inches wide of Oblak's far post.

Bale then found himself in space on the right and he fired a cross into the path of an unmarked Asensio, but he took too long to get the shot off and was closed down.

After the break, Atletico started just as they did the first half and put Real under pressure but this time were unable to get on the scoresheet.

Neither side were able to make their mark in the opening stages of the second period. Though Luka Modric was brought on to a rapturous reception from the Real faithful.

The tide then turned in the favour of Real as Juanfran when grappling with Benzema, was judged to have handled the ball in the penalty area, thus referee Szymon Marciniak pointed to the spot. Ramos stepped up and tucked the ball into the bottom right corner, sending Oblak in the opposite direction, while also bagging his third goal in three finals against Atletico.

Modric's introduction added another gear to Real's attacking play as he operated much closer to Benzema, and offering Los Blancos an added dimension in the final third.

Real were in the ascendency and a vicious Varane volley was headed clear by Saul, before Modric fired just over the crossbar.

Much to the delight of the travelling Atletico fans, Diego Costa got his side level with 11 minutes left to play. Marcelo tried a cheeky flick over the head of Juanfran, who was alert and stole the ball from the Brazilian. The ball then founds its way to Angel Correa, and subsequently Diego Costa, who hammered into the roof of the net.

Both Real Madrid and Atletico were unable to find a late winner, despite Marcelo trying a spectacular bicycle kick in the dying moments, thus game went to extra time.

Dani Carvajal tried a looping effort from the edge of the area after the restart, but Oblak was in no trouble

Then Thomas Partey got free down the right and crossed to the edge of the 18-yard box for Saul, who hit a rasping volley into the top corner.

Simeone's men then added another six minutes later as Party again down the right, found Vitolo on the edge of the area, and he laid off to an unmarked Koke for an easy side-footed finish into the bottom left corner.

Real Madrid never looked able to recover from those two Atlati strikes and had to watch their city rivals lift the UEFA Super Cup in Tallinn.
