Monday briefing: United news from the weekend

Manchester United’s first team may not have been in action over the weekend, due to the international break, yet there is still plenty of club news to catch up on in Your Monday Briefing…

1: Head injury for Luke Shaw
Manchester United's August Player of the Month started for England for the first time since 8 September 2015, but the left-back’s evening unfortunately ended prematurely when he was taken off on a stretcher following an aerial collision with Spain defender Dani Carvajal. Shaw thankfully reported he is “doing fine” in a post-match tweet and vowed to be “back soon”, although it remains to be seen if the defender will be available for our Premier League match at Watford this weekend.

2: Rashford scored for England
Marcus netted his second competitive goal for the Three Lions with a tidy first-time finish from Shaw’s brilliantly-timed pass. It was the first England goal that was scored and assisted by two United players since November 2012, when Ashley Young set up Danny Welbeck against Sweden. Rashford continued to cause problems for the Spanish defence, playing up front with Harry Kane.

3: Mourinho was at Wembley
Jose took his place in the stand at the national stadium and was visibly pleased by the sight of two Reds, Shaw and Rashford, combining superbly for the opening goal. David De Gea’s commanding performance will have also impressed the manager, who had Jesse Lingard to watch as well.

4: Lukaku bagged for Belgium
A first-half goal from Romelu set a clinical Belgium on their way to a 4-0 victory over Scotland in their friendly match at Hampden Park, where Scott McTominay was an unused substitute. The powerful striker has impressively now scored 18 goals in his last 16 appearances for the national team.
