Friendly match between former players to be held in the stadium on Friday 30 June
Next June 30 at the Camp Nou, the Barça Legends will be taking on a team of ex-players from another of Europe’s historic clubs, the Manchester United Legends. This will be the Barça team’s debut in front of their own fans. The game was originally postponed in July because the European Championship would have had a detrimental effect on the line-ups, due to so many of the players having professional duties.
There will also be a return match. On 2 September 2017, the Barça Legends will pay a visit to the English club for a match at Old Trafford.
This game at the Camp Nou will be the second for the Barça Legends. They made their debut last 1 April in the Mexican city of Queretaro against a team of former Mexican stars. Managed by José Mari Bakero, that team included such illustrious names as Stoichkov, Vítor Baía, Edmílson, Popescu, Ronald de Boer and Mendieta.
Barça Legends is the result of an FC Barcelona programme to honour the many footballers that have worn the club jersey over the years. The project hopes to help globalise the Barça name and values through former players, and also help the players continue their careers after their retirement from professional duty. The initiative foresees the holding of different games and the organisation of parallel events in different places around the world. Further Barça Legends matches are expected to be announced soon.
