Eriksen-Spurs deal unlikely, Madrid could be "first option", says source

The signing of Christian Eriksen continues to look like a very real possibility for Real Madrid. According to what AS has learnt, the player is a long way from agreeing a new deal with Tottenham, with his current contract set to expire in June, 2020.

Talks between Spurs and Eriksen began some time ago, but have come to little fruition. And a source close to the player has told AS that there is “nothing optimistic” and a renewal agreement will be “very, very difficult” to reach at this point.

But the possibility of a January move to the Bernabéu is at “0.1%”, according to the source, as Spurs coach Mauricio Pochettino would not allow a key figure to leave with the last 16 of the Champions League around the corner and while the club is in the middle of a battle to secure a top-four spot in the Premier League.

As reported by AS last week, Madrid have already asked Spurs to name their price for the Danish striker, to which the London club responded by demanding 250 million euros.

But time is playing into the hands of the LaLiga club, as Spurs president Daniel Levy will be conscious of running the risk of Eriksen leaving on a free transfer when his contract ends in a year and a half.

The source close to the Dane considers it the right time for him take a step up in his career by joining one of Europe’s top clubs, and estimates that his price tag will be between 50 and 75 million pounds (56 million to 84 million euros).

Spurs and Madrid already talking

As revealed by British daily The Independent, Spurs and Madrid are already speaking of a figure of around 100 million pounds, although Los Blancos will be aware of the difficulties negotiating with Spurs president Levy can entail.

The Eriksen source revealed to AS that the Danish international "sees Madrid as a very big club. For him it would be a great honour to play in the Bernabéu. When we talk about great clubs, of course we talk about Madrid. It could be the first option.”

AS also spoke to his agent Martin Schoots, who chose not to comment on the situation, only saying that Eriksen would prefer to “focus on his football” and “we’ll see what the future brings”.
