Copa del Rey 2nd. Round report: Atletico de Madrid's Copa del Rey nightmare continues in Cornella (1-0)

LaLiga Santander leaders Atletico Madrid fell to a 1-0 defeat away at Segunda B side Cornella on Wednesday night in one of the most surprising upsets of the Copa del Rey so far.

Last season also saw Diego Simeone's side slip up against Segunda B opposition, losing to Cultural Leonesa on that occasion, but Wednesday's team still included the likes of Joao Felix, Angel Correa, Saul Niguez, Vitolo and more. This was by no means a team of kids or reserves.

Atletico seemed unable to find their rhythm, perhaps hindered by the artificial pitch, as Cornella frustrated their high-earning opponents. There was an initial reaction from Los Colchoneros after Cornella took the lead through Adrian Jimenez, a former Atletico B player, but that intensity soon dropped. Matters were not helped when Ricard Sanchez picked up a second yellow in the 63rd minute.

Ultimately, Atletico failed to grab an equaliser on what is yet another disappointing night for Simeone in the Copa del Rey, but, as is often the said when a bigger team drops out of a competition, at least they can focus all of their attention on their title push now.
