Dani Carvajal and Real Madrid are close to reaching an agreement to extend the right-back's contract until June 30, 2024. This is a two-year extension to his current deal and, with an agreement having been reached, all that is needed is for the 28-year-old to put pen to paper.
Carvajal came through Real Madrid's youth system, having joined at the age of 10, and his heart has bled white ever since. Nobody has doubted his loyalty in the past, present and future, while this new deal will keep him at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu until 32, at which point he will have spent 22 years at the club. Carvajal represents Real Madrid's values and the fans identify with him.
In what has been a very successful career to this point, Carvajal did not hesitate when it came to him going to Germany to complete his training. The defender moved to Bayer Leverkusen in 2012 for five million euros, which included a buy-back option, and an impressive season in the Bundesliga led to Los Blancos exercising that option to bring him back to the Spanish capital.
Carvajal was named the best right-back that season, and from that moment on he has occupied the right side of defence for Real Madrid. The defender's lifelong agent, Gines Carvajal, and Jose Angel Sanchez, Los Blancos' general manager, have already laid the groundwork for the contract extension, which is currently set to expire in June 2022. The two parties have agreed that they want to continue on what has been a successful journey so far.
In fact, the presence of the Leganes-born player in Real Madrid's first team was one of the reasons that led Achraf Hakimi to seek a move away from Los Blancos last summer.
The right-back has been in the starting line-up for the last seven seasons, ahead of any teammate that the club have signed to compete with him. Carlo Ancelotti, Rafa Benitez, Zinedine Zidane and Santiago Solari have all put their trust in Carvajal. The player currently behind Carvajal in the pecking order is Alvaro Odriozola, who left the club on loan in the 2020 January transfer window as he went in search of minutes at Bayern Munich.
Now it is the case that both Carvajal and Odriozola are injured, while Zidane's third choice in Nacho Fernandez is also dealing with a knock. In the end, Lucas Vazquez has had to fill in in this position.
The partial tearing of the inner lateral ligament of his right knee, which occurred after a collision with a teammate during training, slowed down the positive luck Carvajal had had with regard to injuries.
In the 2019/20 season he played 42 games. Changes in his diet helped turn his back on some of those muscular issues that had played some bad tricks on him in the past. One month after the injury to his right knee Carvajal has already started training on the pitches at Valdebebas, so he could return to action sooner than first expected.
