Barcelona to seek first victory as locals against Liverpool

In football statistics are meant to be broken. At least that's what Messi and company hope as they take on Liverpool in UEFA Champions League Semi-Finals.

The numbers of FC Barcelona against the Reds in the competitive stage are not the best. In fact Blaugranes have never been able to beat Liverpool as locals, something Valverde's side will seek to change in order to knock Liverpool out for the very first time after three direct-elimination match-ups in which Reds have always gone through.

The first meeting between Barcelona and Liverpool took place in 1975-76 UEFA Cup Semi-finals. Liverpool won the first-leg at Camp Nou 1-0 with a screamer from John Benjamin Toshack and drew the second-leg at Anfield 1-1 with scores from Ray Kennedy and Carles Rexach who set a useless equalizer. The Reds would eventually win the competition beating Club Brugge in the Final.

The next encounter between both Catalan and English giants would come 25 years later and coincidently in UEFA Cup Semi-finals. The Anfield side would beat Barcelona with a 0-0 draw in the first-leg at Camp Nou and a 1-0 victory with the Gary McAllister screamer from the penalty spot. Liverpool would lift against Alavés in Dortmund 2000-01 UEFA Cup, just as they managed to do in 1975-76 season.

The last time Barça faced Liverpool in a knock-out challenge came in UEFA Champions League 2006-07 Round of 16, which is actually the only occassion both clashed for a direct-elimination match-up at the continental's maximum stage. Once again, Liverpool managed to go through with a 2-1 victory at Camp Nou, where Deco's opener was neutralized by Craig Bellamy and John Arne Riise strikes. Barça would eventually find the victory in the second-leg through Eidur Gudjohnsen goal. However it was Rafael Benítez's side the one who found themselves progressing in the competition losing Athens's Final against Milan, in the re-edition of legendary's Ataturk Final won by the Reds.

Barça and Liverpool where matched at the Groups Stage just once, in the 2001-02 season. Catalans got a stunning 3-1 victory at Anfield, with Patrick Kluivert, Fabio Rochenback and Marc Overmars, culminating a brilliant 64 touches possesion and crystallizing Barcelona's fantastic comeback after Michael Owen's opener.
