Barcelona 5-1 Lyon: Another Messi recital puts Blaugrana into the quarterfinals

Lionel Messi mesmerised once again as Barcelona cruised past Lyon 5-1 to make the quarterfinals of the Champions League.

Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain were both upset at home last week and Lyon represented a dangerous opponent for Barca after a goalless draw in France in the first leg.

And there were some nervy moments for Barca in the second half after Lucas Tousart made it 2-1 but with Messi so focused in Europe the home side were always likely to advance at Camp Nou.

Messi opened the scoring from the penalty spot with a Panenka as Barca delivered one of their best 45 minutes of the season in first half.

The penalty was debatable -- Jason Denayer was deemed to have fouled Luis Suarez -- but the 2-0 lead at the break was not. Coutinho added the second after good play from Arthur and Suarez.

Tousart pulled one back as Barca's good work in the first half was put under threat but then Messi popped up.

He made it 3-1 when fed by Ivan Rakitic, turning Marcelo and Denayer before beating the goalkeeper Mathieu Gorgelin, who had replaced the injured Anthony Lopes in the first half.

Messi then tasked himself with creating. First of all he produced a sublime assist for Gerard Pique and then he set up substitute Ousmane Dembele.

Barca are into the last eight for the 12th season running and they're the only Spanish side there following the eliminations of Real Madrid and Atletico.

There are still some tough sides left in, though. England are represented by four sides, including Pep Guardiola's Manchester City, and Cristiano Ronaldo's Juventus showed they mean business on Tuesday.

But Barça -- with Messi -- remain in the competition as they look to win their first European Cup since 2015.
