Ander Herrera: I'm proud to play for Manchester United

It's four years this week since Ander Herrera first stepped onto the Old Trafford turf, on the opening day of the 2014/15 season against Swansea City.

Since then, the midfielder has gone on to become a fan favourite and an integral part of the Manchester United team.

Speaking to Inside United, our official monthly magazine, the Spaniard looked back with fondness at what he has accomplished so far and is excited for the future.

"First of all, it makes me feel very proud, because when you play for Manchester United, you have to deserve, every season, to keep playing for the club," said Herrera, who turns 29 today (Tuesday).

"I think the manager is very happy with me, the fans are very happy with me, so that makes me really proud."

Herrera has featured regularly for United since signing from Athletic Bilbao in the summer of 2014, making over 160 appearances.

Having been named in the squad for United's Emirates FA Cup, EFL Cup and Europa League triumphs in 2016 and 2017, he has shown he is no stranger to the big occasion, either.

Tigerish in the tackle and unwaveringly committed to the cause, Herrera has long since endeared himself to United's supporters.

Ander's popularity, along with his performances in the 2016/17 campaign, earned him the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award. With all of these accomplishments, Herrera has realised just how positive his time at United has been.

"All the memories I have are amazing," Ander added. "I have been able to win trophies for the club, I have been able to play more than 160 games right now, so what I have in my mind is to go for the 200 games and keep adding games for the club and for myself."

Ander burst onto the scene when he signed for United in 2014. The Spaniard scored in United's fourth match of the Premier League campaign against Queens Park Rangers and went on to net a further seven goals in his debut season at the club, including a stunning volley against Yeovil Town in the FA Cup, which wouldn't be the last time he scored at Huish Park.

As well as providing goals, the midfielder has pulled the strings in in a number of key clashes. In 2017, Herrera set away Marcus Rashford to score in what would be a prized victory against the would-be Premier League champions, Chelsea, and was in his element against Ajax as United won the Europa League that same season.

In the previous campaign, the Spaniard came back to haunt Yeovil in the FA Cup and also scored the winner in the semi-final against Tottenham Hotspur as the Reds came from behind to win 2-1. Ander then turned provider in the derby with a brilliant chest assist for Paul Pogba, which kick-started United's comeback to put Manchester City's title celebrations on hold.

With Herrera quickly approaching that double century of appearances for the club, he is now firmly settled and wants to continue to impress the United faithful, by whom he is held in high regard.

"The way the club treats me is perfect, the love the fans show for me couldn't be better or bigger, my family is happy in Manchester, so I just try to give everything and put all my strength and effort to keep deserving to play for this club," he added.
